Yes, we're lucky to have an amazing facility here at YMCA Camp Sloper, but it is truly the staff who make our camp great. In the summer, and throughout the year, YMCA Camp Sloper is home to hundreds of dedicated staff members who love working here. Many of them were past campers and many departing staff find themselves in related fields for their careers such as Teaching, Pediatrics, Social Work, and Occupational/Physical Therapy.
Although we can't showcase the majority of our Sloper Staff Family, take a moment to see who our summer of 2023 Leadership Staff are.
Camp Director - Justin Hubeny
Justin has been working at the YMCA Camp Sloper and the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA for 20 years, and has been the Camp Director of Sloper for 7 years. Justin has been apart of many different departments throughout his years including Youth Sports, Child Care Morning and After care, Teens, and Day Camp. At camp, he has had many roles as well, including Senior Counselor, Specialty East Director, East Coast Director, Assistant Camp Director, and currently Camp Director. Some of Justin's favorite activities to do at YMCA Camp Sloper are playing a round of Frisbee Golf, hitting home runs at the Sloper Stadium, and hiking the Sloper trails with his wife Danielle and Daughters Ella and Ava. He is a board member of the Conneciticut Camping Association and is a major figure in the CT camping community. When Justin is not at camp, you can find him rooting for his favorite sports city, Philadelphia, specifically the Eagles.
Assistant Camp Director - "Too Tall" Tom Sangeloty
Tom has been with YMCA Camp Sloper since 2012 when he joined the Sloper family as a senior counselor. He then moved into other roles at camp such as the Specialty East Director and East Coast Director until reaching his current position as the Outdoor Center Program Director. Too Tall Tom, as the campers know him, oversees the Wanderers and C.I.T.s, all specialty area directors, waterfronts and oversees all Birthday Parties, Rentals, School Groups, Teambuilding and events. Tom's favorite things to do at camp include completing the High Ropes elements, hitting a bullseye at Archery, and performing on stage at LOGS. When not at camp, you can find Too Tall Tom on the golf course with his family!
Camp Office Administrator - Sarah Dupre
Sarah joined the YMCA family in spring of 2020 as Sloper's Office Administrator. To most that work at camp, Sarah would be considered the "all-powerful camp mom" as she is the backbone of what camp is. Sarah handles all documentation, rentals, profiles, payments, and so much more all year round! Although newer to the world of Sloper, she is no stranger to the Sloper way. With two campers of her own, she has a parent perspective of camp. When not working at camp, you can find her most weekends back at Sloper on the many hiking trails with her family and dogs.
Assistant Camp Director - Darren Battle
Darren joined the YMCA family in August 2024, but he is no stranger to the YMCA spirit. Growing up at the former Norwalk YMCA, he grew up immersed in its programs—before and after care, swim lessons, basketball, and several birthday parties. Darren serves as an assistant camp director for Camp Sloper and the Southington YMCA Youth Director.
At camp, Darren’s favorite activity is four square, and he never misses a chance to race down the super slide. When he’s not at Sloper, you can find him cheering on the CCSU Blue Devils, UConn Huskies, Yanks, Jets, Lakers, and NJ Devils.
East Coast Director - Kaylee Drobish
Kaylee joined the Sloper team in the summer of 2018 as a counselor, quickly establishing herself as one of the most energetic and enthusiastic staff we have. For the past 3 years, Kaylee has been the Explorer Director, leading our 2nd-3rd graders. At camp, Kaylee's favorite things to do are swimming in Sloper Pond and finding big crystals in the Crystal Mine.
Kaylee graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University while also playing on both the ECSU Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams. When not at camp, Kaylee loves to play field hockey, lacrosse, and board games with her friends and family.
West Coast Director - Matt Calbo
Matt started his Sloper journey as a camper, finding his way to the Sloper staff team shortly there after. Matt has had many years of impact at camp as a counselor, but really shined as a Unit Director, specifically Pioneers and Specialty East, winning back to back Director of the Summer awards (the first in history to do so!).
Matt is currently a full time High School Chemistry teacher. At camp, you can find Matt running the trails, cooling off on the Splash Pad, or dominating the kickball field. Outside of camp, Matt loves Pokemon, but Matt's biggest passion is attending as many Dave Matthew's Band concerts as he can. So far...he's seen them over 20 times.
